Welcome to the DragChamp Top 10 List. The only weekly sportsman racing Top 10 List on the internet!
9/18/19 – The weekly sportsman drag racing Top 10 List is back for another edition. This week racers competed at events across the country in search of trophies, money, and fame.
The DragChamp Top 10 List recaps all the action from the weekend and showcases the best performances from racetracks all across the U.S. As usual, our fans blew up our Facebook page on Monday night with a large number of nominations.
We rank the nominations and showcase them on the Top 10 List. This week’s list includes a little something for everyone. It includes winners from the NHRA national event at Maple Grove, bracket racing, bracket finals, and the junior dragster class.
DragChamp Top 10 List
1 – Joe Santangelo
Joe has been on an absolute tear this season in the NHRA Stock and Super Stock class. While he’s won in both classes in 2019, and leads the national points in both, his performance last weekend earned him the one spot.
Competing at the Mopar Express Lane NHRA Nationals in Maple Grove, Joe drove his ’69 Camaro Stocker to the event win. The win came at his last race to claim for the national championship points race. It also extended his lead and put him in great position to earn the world championship.
2 – Brian Cireddu
To top off his impressive season, Cireddu claimed the Division 3 Race of Champions win over the weekend.
3 – John DiBartolomeo
Johnny D grabbed the three spot this week with and impressive two race stretch in Super Stock. Just over a week ago, he won Super Stock at the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals at Norwalk. It was the second year in a row that he won the event.
Fast forward a week and John drove his ’86 Camaro to his second NHRA final round in a week at the Mopar Express NHRA Nationals. His winning streak stopped in the final round but definitely an impressive performance for the Editorial Director of Drag Racing Edge magazine!
4 – Kyle Bigley
The 2018 Division 1 Super Comp champion has put together a solid season in his first attempt at chasing the national championship. After a runner up finish a week ago at the New England LODRS event, Bigley put his dragster in the final for a second straight week.
This time, competing at the Mopar Express Lane NHRA Nationals, Bigley parked it on the dance floor after winning his first national event! Kyle defeated Ken Moses in the final who he had lost to in the final round of the New England Nationals earlier this season.
5 – Mikie Sturgill and John Markham
We have a tie to round out the Top 5. Both Mikie Sturgill and John Markham are making return trips to Pomona after their big wins at the Division 3 bracket finals.
John Markham rode his motorcycle to the championship last season in Pomona and will get a shot at repeating that performance again.
Mikie Sturgill also earned a return trip after winning the Race of Champions to earn the wild card entry to Pomona!
6 – Kevin Brannon
KB showed out at the IHRA Division 9 Summit Team Finals last weekend. After winning the Race of Champions, KB raced to the final round of the Top class where he would lose to Joe Gary.
7 – Charlie & Wesley Lockhart
Charlie had another great weekend at Beacon Dragway. He was runner up in Mod to his brother Wesley, runner up in Top, and won Sportsman. He also outlasted Wesley for the Mod season points title!
8 – Brian Hughes
Brian Hughes earned the eight spot this week with a dominating performance at the Division 4 Bracket Finals. Brian drove his Pinto to the Pro class win in the Friday Gamblers race. That was followed by a win in Saturday’s main event. The Pinto will be making a trip to Pomona!
9 – Cody Graham
Cody locks down the nine spot this week after picking up two wins and a semifinal over the weekend. He started the weekend by taking two entries down to three cars at the Super Pro race at Memphis.
He ended up collecting the $2,000 winners check at the Memphis race. He then drove to New Port Dragway in Arkansas where he won Footbrake in his Camaro.
Two wins, one semifinal, in two cars, at two different tracks! Pretty cool.
10 – Bryan Walker and David Myhre
We have a tie for the ten spot this week as both Bryan Walker and David Myhre continued their winning ways last week.
Bryan Walker drove to yet another final round at Ozark Raceway. This time he made the Super Pro final. This was his seventh final in the last six weeks.
David Myhre continues to impress on the West Coast. Last week he collected a win and a runner up at Redding Dragway.
Although these racers just missed the list, their impressive performances couldn’t go unrecognized!
Kevin Gnehm – Kevin claimed the $5K win at Atco Dragway. He earned the win in a race car that uses hand controls! Pretty impressive I’d say.
Leah Catherine Smith – Leah made 6 finals in 8 races this season at Holly Springs. This propelled her to the track championship.
Seth McLean – Seth won the Pro class in a 11.70 street car at Firebird Raceway. He did this footbraking his Dodge with a broken right foot!
Kane Kern – Kane continues to tear up the Junior scene in the South Central area. At State Capitol Dragway, Cody won the Friday Gamblers race and then won both the 11.90 and 8.90 classes on Saturday!
James West – James was the Super Pro runner up at Buffalo Valley on Friday and then won the Wendell Webster Jr. Memorial race on Saturday. In a touching moment, he presented the trophy to Wendell Webster Sr. And that my friends is what sportsman racing is all about!
