Kyle Cultrera wins $20K at SFG 500

Kyle Cultrera wins Wednesday $20,000 Warm Up race at the SFG 500

MARTIN, MICH. – The SFG 500 race week kicked off on Wednesday at US 131 Motorsports Park with a $20,000 Warm Up race. 660 racers made the call for first round with each one looking to pad their pockets in the opening race of the event.

The massive field competed throughout the day and well into the night before a rain shower forced a Thursday completion. After wrapping up around 3am on Wednesday night, racers were back in action by 8am Thursday morning.

When the dust settled, Kyle Cultrera defeated Ray Holmes to collect the $20,000 payday. Holmes turned it red by -.004 in the final to hand the win to Cultrera. Kyle was .009 at the hit before taking his victory lap.

Prior to the final, Cultrera defeated Will Holloman in a double-breakout quarterfinal match up. Holloman’s .011 take .007 was no good as his 4.637 put him -.013 under to Kyle’s .009 and -.004 under 4.606.

In the semifinals, Cultrera defeated a red-lighting Gary Ingold to advance to the final round. Ingold missed the tree by the smallest of margins after letting go -.001 too soon. Cultrera would have been a tough out as he laid down .006 total. His .006 dead zero was an impressive lap.

Holmes, driving his early model Corvette, won a super close contest with Jody Davies in the quarterfinals. Holmes was .004 and .024 above to take .0004 (yes, less than a thousandth) at the stripe to take down Davies’ .028 dead zero lap.

He won another close contest against Dan Northrup in the semifinals. With a shot at $20,000 on the line, Holmes was .004 again and .010 above to edge out Northrup’s .009 and .010 above. This resulted in a finish line margin of .005-second.

With the $20,000 Warm Up completed, racers moved into Thursday’s $50,000 bracket race. As if 660 entries on Wednesday wasn’t enough, there were over 710 racers entered for the Thursday $50K. With that many entries, the race turns into a marathon which presents additional challenges to each competitor.
