Labbous wins Super Gas at NHRA Carolina Nationals

Johnny Labbous Jr. picked up national event win number seven after taking home the Super Gas Wally at the NHRA Carolina Nationals.

CHARLOTTE – Sportsman racing super star Johnny Labbous rolled through a tough Super Gas field at the Carolina Nationals to collect his latest Wally. Labbous earned national event win number seven while competing in his 15th final round.

Before squaring off against Sherman Adcock in the final, Labbous navigated his way past hitters David Tatum, Steve Hoyt, Jim Perry, and Lauren Freer. To reach the final, he posted five laps of 9.913 or better including a perfect 9.900 in the second round.

Labbous opened eliminations with a breakout victory over Tatum. Tatum left first, .009 to .013, but Labbous won at the top end when he dropped to a 9.913 sending Tatum through with a losing 9.891. Labbous then laid down .014 total after Steve Hoyt fouled in round two.

He then used a holeshot to move past Skip Walls to setup up a round four encounter with Jim Perry. Perry took a slight lead off the line, .017 to .023, but once again, Labbous won the finish line when his 9.910 outran Perry’s 9.927.

This set up an epic battle with Lauren Freer in the semifinals. Freer threw .013 total at Labbous and he gave her .004 change back! Her .005 dead eight came up a little short against his .003 dead six lap.

2019 Carolina Nationals Super Gas Final

Much like Labbous, Sherman Adcock drove an excellent race to reach the final round. Adcock averaged a .012 reaction through the first five rounds and consistently ran near the index.

Although he had killed the tree leading up to the final, Adcock missed it in the final allowing Labbous to take control of the race. .010 to .027. At the stripe, Labbous dropped to a 9.927 while Adcock just missed the index posting a too quick 9.898 for the breakout loss.
