A year after winning his first national event title in Super Stock at the Fall Nationals, Brandon Bakies returned to the Texas Motorplex and won the Stock Eliminator title at the 2019 Fall Nationals.
ENNIS, TX – Brandon Bakies now has two national event victories and both have come at the AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals. Last season Brandon earned the Super Stock title at the Texas Motorplex for his first national event win. In 2019 he won the Fall Nationals again but this time in Stock Eliminator.
Bakies drove his G/SA ’72 Cutlass to victory lane after turning back a Dale Hulquist in the final round. To reach the final Bakies survived a heads up G/SA battle with Division 4 veteran Verne Buchanon in the semifinals.
Brandon kicked off eliminations with a big holeshot over Daniel Doughty. Bakies then outlasted Brainerd champ Brett Speer in round two. Speer trailed at both ends of the track to advance Bakies.
He then used a .040 to .073 reaction time advantage to win a double-breakout race with Bill Bagley in round three. In his round four matchup with Greg Stanfield, Bakies was .024 take .001 to win the double-breakout race by .007.
This setup a huge heads-up semifinal battle with Verne Buchanan. On paper Verne looked to have a little over a tenth performance advantage. But Bakies came up big in the race taking a .015 to .059 reaction time advantage at the hit. Brandon extended his lead down track taking an 11.117 to an 11.160 win at the top end.
Dale Hulquist reached his third NHRA final round to square off against Bakies. After back-to-back dead-on laps in rounds three and four, Hulquist looked to have encountered problems with his car in the semifinals. There he was .06 over his dial while defeating Wes Neely. After dialing up in the final, Hulquist ran .070 slow again allowing Bakies’ .047 above 11.387 to take the win.
Congrats to Brandon Bakies and his family on their second NHRA national event victory.
