Don Nichols earned his second national event title after defeating Christopher Dodd in the NHRA Fall Nationals Super Comp final.
ENNIS, TX – Don Nichols captured his second national event title at the recently completed AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex. Nichols raced past Midwest Nationals winner Christopher Dodd in the final round.
Nichols used a series of outstanding reaction times and a consistent race car to earn his latest victory. A year after competing for the Super Comp world title, Nichols put everything together at the Motorplex. In round one Nichols stopped current championship contender Brian Preszler.
In the opening frame, Nichols used a .001 to .038 advantage off the line to take a 8.879 to 8.859 double-breakout victory over Preszler. He then threw an .011-pack at Cole Cummings to advance to round three.
There Nichols posted a second-consecutive 8.90 lap to edge past Terry Pollard. His .016 dead two pass was more than enough to overcome Pollard’s .010 light and 8.925 lap.
At the round of eight, Nichols used a .008 light to take a double-breakout win over Koy Collier 8.893 to Collier’s further under 8.885. This setup a semifinal match up with John Warren. Nichols advanced to the final after Warren posted an unusually late .102 reaction.
Waiting for Nichols in the final round was recent Midwest Nationals winner and JEGS Allstar champ Christopher Dodd. Dodd rolled through a tough crowd to reach his second-consecutive final. That included racers such as Lyndon Rutland, Mark Grame, Austin Williams, Jeremy Demers, and Tony Brown.
The final was a great race that was ultimately decided by .0016-second. Both drivers posted .00 reactions (.006 for Dodd and .007 for Nichols) and raced towards the top end. There Nichols’ 8.932 outdistanced Dodd’s 8.934 by the slimmest of margins. The difference at the stripe was about five inches.
Congratulations to Don Nichols on his Super Comp victory at the Fall Nationals.
