Phil Smida collected his fifth NHRA national event at the recently completed Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Motorsports Park.
NORWALK – Super class ace Phil Smida took home the Super Comp Wally from the rescheduled Summit Racing Equipment Nationals. Racing at the famed Summit Motorsports Park, Smida defeated Adam Gerber in the final round.
Smida put on a show during the six round race posting four dead-on 8.90 laps. This included three straight 8.90’s to close out the event. In addition to his ultra consistent dragster, Smida was also solid at the tree averaging a .016 light through six rounds.
Phil opened eliminations with a breakout win over Christina DiBartolomeo. He advanced after his 8.908 bested her 8.878 breakout effort. He then used a .003 to .021 reaction time advantage to down Ray Connolly when both drivers ran above the index.
The hitters keep coming as Smida paired against U.S. Nationals runner up Rock Haas in round three. Smida advanced after Haas broke during the burnout. Phil laid down his best lap of the weekend (.006, 8.906) in round four after Dean McIlvain let go -.006 too son.
At three cars, Smida laid down another dead on lap to defeat Jason Hartig. His .018 dead-on nine proved too much for Hartig’s .038 initiated 8.912. This moved Smida into the final round against Adam Gerber.
Gerber opened eliminations with three straight .00x reactions. He used these reactions to advance past Leo Zynda, Mike Robilotto, Steve Fields, and Blake Richardson to reach the final round.
Both drivers missed the tree in the final although Phil’s .028 to .033 advantage proved to be the difference in the race. After a near even start, Smida drove the stripe to perfection taking .005 to win the 8.908 to 8.908 final.
