DragChamp nation, meet Aria Hawkins. This small but mighty racer made her debut this past month at Orlando Speedworld and is already making her mark.
Aria has a long history of drag racers in her family so naturally she found her place in the sport as well. Her uncle Tony Sarvis, her aunt Courtney Wilburth and her mother Alicia Hawkins all have paved the way for Aria’s racing career. Her Junior Dragster actually belonged to her uncle Tony.
As soon as Aria first saw the Junior Dragsters run at Orlando Speedworld, she knew she wanted to race. Her mother Alicia and boyfriend, Matt Brewer didn’t hesitate to make plans with Marco Lopez for Aria to take his Jr X Drag Racing School. That Friday night she made her first pass down the track with a reaction time of .823 and ran a 12.77. She was so excited and wanted to go again immediately and ended up making another pass.
With all of her excitement, they decided to compete the next day in the points race at Orlando Speedworld. She was given two time runs and struggled a bit on the tree but it was expected from any 6-year-old. First round came and her lights started coming around. She was .083 but unfortunately broke out and headed to the buy-back window for the first time in her career. After buying her back in, her lights seemed to get better every pass which is so impressive for her first time in competition. Second round she was .071 and then eventually found herself sitting with a bye to final after a stellar .006 light in third round.
They had a few hiccups with the motor throughout the night but everyone was helping her get down the track round after round. In the final, Aria was .019 to her opponents .092 light and unfortunately her chain popped off and she picked up the runner-up. May we also mention that many of her opponents were about twice her age! How many people can say they runnered-up their first night out? We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Miss Aria.
