Ed Olpin Jr visited the winners circle again after winning Super Gas at the NHRA Arizona Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Phoenix, AZ.
POMONA- Ed Olpin Jr. earned the Super Gas NHRA Wally after defeating Matthew Larson in the final round at the Arizona Nationals at Phoenix. This was Olpin’s second NHRA Wally.
Super class racer Ed Olpin Jr. was thrilled to visit the winner’s circle for the second time of his career. Many stellar rounds led Olpin to the final round on Sunday evening. Olpin averaged a .019 reaction time through six rounds of eliminations, which was crucial to his success.
In the first round of eliminations, Olpin let go with an .013 reaction time and ran a 9.91 to take the win over Ryan Smith. Smith was .027 and ran a 9.934.
Olpin took the second-round double breakout victory over John Parrino. With the starting line advantage, .054 to .072, Olpin ran closer to the dial-in going a 9.884 to Parrino’s 9.872.
Ed was giving the easy road to fourth round after third round opponent Jerry Denton flinched and turned on the red bulb. Olpin was .014 and ran a 9.813. This round victory gave him the fourth-round bye run.
Olpin and Bernie Polvadore squared up in the semifinal round. With two close reaction times, .011 to .022, Olpin had to the starting line advantage and it helped him take the win. Ed threw down an .016 package and sent Polvadore through the lights, causing him to break out by .013.
The final two competitors remaining were Olpin and Matthew Larson. Larson made it to the final round after posting good reaction times and making it past names like Evan Kowalkski and Rick Cates.
Olpin threw down a .001 reaction time and ran a 9.943 to take the hole shot win. Larson was .052 and ran a closer 9.932, but his late reaction time cost him the trophy.
