The Big Go with Mike Boehner – Part 2 Road Trip

2019 NHRA Division 7 Super Gas Champ Mike Boehner introduces part 2 of his behind the scenes cross-country road trip to compete in the JEGS Allstars and the U.S. Nationals at INDY.

The team at DragChamp has partnered with 2019 NHRA Division 7 Super Gas champ Mike Boehner to bring you a behind-the-scenes look at his cross-country road trip to INDY! Mike will be competing in both the JEGS Allstars and U.S. Nationals for the first time and will share his experiences with us throughout the process.

Road Trip:

As promised, I’m back for part two of our family trip to the Allstars.  To be honest with you, I’m struggling with what to share.  I know you are all racers, and want to see stories about racing.  I don’t want to bore you to death with the details of the first few days of our travels.  But guess what?  I’m going to anyway!  If I bore you to sleep here, please don’t give up on me.  I will have some racing news in part 3!

Day 1:

Gillian and I left our home in Lake Havasu City and headed east to Moriarty, NM where we would meet her dad, Ed.  Many of you who follow NHRA .90 racing have probably heard of Michael Miller.  His parents John and Linda, were kind enough to let Ed park his truck in their shop for our trip.  Ed threw his bags in with us, and we continued eastbound, where we would stop for the night in Weatherford, OK in a Walmart parking lot.

Day 2:

On our first leg of the trip our goal was to make it to Amarillo, but it was way too early to stop.  Since we were hours ahead of schedule, I called up my good friend Erica (yes, that Erica) and asked if we could stop by the race shop and have a look around.  The problem with that was, I lost track of the days, and didn’t realize it was Sunday before asking!  Erica was still kind enough to get up out of bed early and give us the tour.  Here’s a little secret about Erica.  She likes her sleep.  So I have to give a huge thank you once again to her!  It was pretty cool for us to see the shop and offices of a championship pro team.

After our tour, we loaded up, and hit the road again.  Our next stop would be in a sketchy Walmart parking lot in Little Rock, AR where we met my mom and sister Michelle.

Day 3:

Now that we’ve got the whole band together,  we made the short drive to Memphis, TN to tour Graceland in hopes of finding Elvis alive.  Not long into our tour, I caught Gillian being serenaded by Elvis, and she seemed to be loving it.  So at this point, I’m hoping he’s not still alive for the sake of my marriage!  If you’d like to see the video of this, come check out my facebook page, and you’ll see what I’m talking about!

After our tour, we moved across the parking lot into our camp spot right there at Graceland for a good night’s sleep.

Day 4:

Off to Nashville!  This is what I’ve been most excited to see, and it did not disappoint!  Well, aside from having to wear a mask everywhere, no standing up at the bars, and no dancing.  So basically no fun.  But we didn’t let that stop us!  We had such a good time, and can’t wait to go back after Covid!  The amount of musical talent was unbelievable!

Day 5:

Time to go racing! Today we pack up and head to Bowling Green, KY for the LODRS race.  I’ve never seen so much green grass and trees at a racetrack.  We are definitely nowhere close to the desert anymore!

It’s pretty special to me to be able to race somewhere as iconic as Beechbend Raceway Park, and meet so many new people on the other side of the country from us.  If you’re at Beechbend, come by and say howdy!  We’re past the finishline along the fence.
