We continue our 2019 Year End Top 10 List. The focus this week is on the Top Bulb Top 10 List as we rank the best Top Bulb bracket racers in the country.
01/08/20 – The only weekly sportsman racing Top 10 List is back for a special Top Bulb edition. We continue our 2019 Top 10 Specialty List this week by focusing on the Top Bulb bracket racers.
This is by far the most difficult list to produce as there are so many big money races and so many talented drivers. We’ve combed through the Top 10 Lists from 2019 and ranked the best Top Bulb racers for the season.
Special thanks to DragChamp Nation and your help each week putting this list together. We couldn’t do it without the nominations submitted to our Facebook page.
DragChamp 2019 Top Bulb Top 10 List
1 – Hunter Patton
Hunter Patton went on a run for the ages in 2019 and for that he is the 2019 DragChamp Top Bulb Racer of Year. This young man destroyed the competition both in his home state of Texas as well as at the largest bracket races in the county.
The man known as “Hunny Wayne” picked up wins literally everywhere he raced. He won at the GABR in May, won the Fall Fling 500K, won the D4 IHRA Bracket Finals, and almost swept the 3-day Texas Fall Bracket Frenzy just to name a few.
Congrats to Hunny Wayne on a great 2019 season!
2 (tie) – Matt Dadas
In most years, Hunter Patton would have run away with the Driver of the Year title but not in 2019! Matt Dadas proved his versatility and driving prowess by driving multiple cars to countless wins. Most notably Matt was the car owner of the Danger Ranger Gage Burch drove to victory at the SFG 500.
Matt proved he’s more than a great car owner when drove to a runner-up finish at the Fall Fling 500K. Two 500K races, a win and a RU…that’s pretty good in my opinion.
But Matt wasn’t done, he continued to turn on win lights in his Starfire, his Camaro, and pretty much anything else he jumped in. Heck, he even won a street car race over the winter.
2 (tie) – Johnny Ezell
Not to be outdone by Patton and Dadas, JBR came in a close second for the 2019 Driver of the Year award. Ezell won about as much as anybody in the country in 2019 including a runner-up finish in the SFG 500.
Johnny left Michigan, drove straight to Texas and collected a $50K Shootout win at the Texas Motorplex. He also won the next night and went deep on Day 3. JBR won big at the Spring Fling and the Texas Triple Tens. He wrapped up the season with a win at the Turkey Beach Bash in Gulfport, Miss.
3 – Peeps Pennington
Although he no longer travels the big money bracket racing circuit as diligently as he once did, Peeps is still a threat. The Texas-based racer started the year by winning the Spring Fling Million.
4 – Sugar Shane Carr
#26 (aka Shane Carr) sits in the four spot on the Top Bulb Top 10 List after another huge season. The former Million Dollar Race winner posted a runner-up finish at the Spring Fling Million. The hired-gun continued his winning ways earning several big money race wins across the country in a variety of race cars.
5 – Chris Bear
My notes say Chris Bear pretty much won everywhere in 2019! The talented bracket racer stopped Gage Burch was a double at the SFG 500. Bear took out Burch in the Thursday $50K. He also collected a semifinal finish in Friday’s $50K.
6 (tie) – Gage Burch
You know it’s a tough list when you win $500K and end of sixth! Gage had a great season that began with multiple double-up performances in his home-state of Florida.
This super-talented young man is going to be a force in the bracket racing world for years to come!
6 (tie) – Dave Triplett
Dave Triplett secured his spot on the 2019 Top Bulb Top 10 after winning the Million Dollar Race for the second time. Dave became just the third racer to earn multiple Million Dollar Race wins.
7 – Cory Gulitti
Texas-based Cory Gulitti followed a tremendous 2018 season with another strong performance in 2019. The full-time big money bracket racer had big weekends at events across the country. Some of these included the Texas Turkey Hunt, Hot August Nights, GABR 20K, New Year Nationals, and the Texas Fall Frenzy.
8 – Jeff Serra
Like Chris Bear, Jeff Serra seemed to win everywhere he raced in 2019. He was a consistent fixture on the Top 10 List and he sponsored the list for a big part of the year. The In Motion Solutions owner drove to a number of large wins including the Colonial Classic, Super Doorcar Shootout, and the Numidia 150 to name a few.
9 (tie) – Will Holloman
Will Holloman had a great year competing on the big money bracket racing tour. Among his many successful weekends, Holloman earned a semifinal finish at the SFG 500, won a $65K dragster at SFG World Series, and split the $20K final at the Spring Fling GALOT.
9 (tie) – Mikey Bloomfield
Another big name in the sport, Mikey Bloomfield, secured a spot in the 2019 Top Bulb Top 10 List by earning a huge payday. Bloomfield collected a $200,000 payday after winning the SFG World Series.
10 (tie) – Kevin Thorp
Like Peeps, Kevin Thorp didn’t show up every week but when he did, it counted! Thorp started the year with a $30K win at the Spring Fling Vegas. Later in the year, Thorp outlasted 30+ past Fling winners to earn the King of the Fling title in Bristol.
10 (tie) – Duston Wurtz
West Coast bracket racer Duston Wurtz rounds out the Top 10 List. Duston is a tall, quiet young man that can flat out drive a race car. I first learned of his prowess after he ran himself in the final of the West Coast Classic $20K earlier in the year.
In that race, Duston went unbeaten in both entries to meet himself in the final round. He also won on the NHRA divisional level and came up .002 short of a $50K win at the SFG Big Fun Event in Tucson.
Just because they weren’t ranked, they still deserve some love for their amazing performances. Here’s a little something extra!
Mikie Sturgill gets a shout out for his redemption year. In 2018 Mikie won the D3 Bracket Finals and earned a trip to Pomona. When he lost in the first round, he vowed to come back and win. A year later, he did just that earning the 2019 Super Pro National Championship.
Curt Harvey was the hottest racer on the planet in the early summer months. In a four week stretch, Harvey won twice at the Texas Triple Tens, followed that with another $10K win at the GABR, won a local bracket race, and finished with a runner-up at the Lone Star Summer Shootout.
Garrett Griffith earned a shout out after winning $100,000 at the Derby City $100K. The 17-year old also picked up numerous wins at the local level.
Jason Padd gets our north of the border shout out. The Canadian-based racer made final rounds on a weekly basis. Padd became the first racer ever to win the Top Eliminator 1/4 mile series championship and the Cash is King 1/8 mile series championship in the same year.
