DragChamp 2020 Class Racing Top 10 List
1 – Christopher Dodd
2020 Super Comp World Champ Christopher Dodd is our 2020 Super Class Racer of the Year! Dodd has been one of the hottest drivers in the 8.90 class for the last several years collecting Wally’s like their going out of style. The talented Texan had the second highest points total of all the Lucas Oil classes in 2020. Super Stock Champ Bryan Worner was the only racer in the country to accumulate more points that Dodd this season.
The highlight of Christopher’s season included national event victories at the Midwest Nationals and the Fall Nationals. He also collected three LODRS victories on the season including a big win at the INDY divisional in August. Dodd just missed winning back-to-back JEGS Allstar races after falling in the final round this season. 2 – Brian Preszler
A year after finishing second in the Super Comp national standings, Brian Preszler improved by one spot to claim the NHRA Super Gas World Championship in 2020. Preszler opened the season with a win and a quarterfinal finish at the Sonoma double divisional in July. He would add two more LODRS victories later in the season to outlast Jason Kenny and Justin Lopes in the championship battle.
3 – Brian Sawyer
Brian Sayer continues to dominate the Division 1 Super Street scene. In 2020, Sawyer successfully defended his Division title after racing to two wins and two runner up finishes. The highlight of the season came at the Virginia Motorsports Park double divisional. There he won the rain delayed New England JEGS Sportsnational title along with winning the second LODRS event of the weekend.
4 – James Kunkel
The biggest story of the 2020 Super categories was James Kunkel and his Super Comp doorcar. Not only did James race a doorcar in the sea of dragsters, he did it with a top-end throttle stop! In his first real attempt at running the car in Super Comp, Kunkel swept the Division 5 LODRS doubleheader at Topeka in July. His 15 straight round wins grabbed national attention due to the unconventional nature of his setup. James added another LODRS victory to close out the season with a Top 10 finish nationally and a Division 5 Championship.
5 – Troy Williams Jr.
While Troy Williams Jr. is no stranger to winners circles, he made some noise after winning the granddaddy of them all, the NHRA U.S. Nationals on Labor Day. The talented bracket racer pulled away from the big money racing just long enough to win INDY and finish #2 in the national standings. Pretty impressive feat for someone who rarely ever uses a throttle stop.
6 – Val Torres Sr.
The Torres family is well known within the Super categories and their track record speaks for itself. Val Sr. jumped into the limelight early in the season with back-to-back national event victories at the Winternationals and the Arizona Nationals. Torres also claimed two LODRS victories in 2020 which propelled him to Top 10 finishes nationally in Super Gas and Super Comp in addition to the Division 7 Super Comp championship.
7 – Trevor Larson
Trevor Larson locked down the seven spot in our 2020 Top 10 List after another strong season. Larson picked up the Division 7 Super Street championship this year along with winning the JEGS Allstars in Super Comp. Trevor also swept the Earlville National Open weekend in Super Comp.
8 – Mark Smith
Mark Smith lost the 2019 Division 3 Super Street title on a tied-breaker but returned in 2020 to earn the championship. Smith’s highlights included a win and a runner-up at the Division 3 doubleheader weekend in Columbus where he was runner-up in the LODRS event and won the Sportsnationals title. The Sportsnationals victory was his first in national event competition. He would make his second national event final at the U.S. Nationals where he fell short to Raymond Miller.
9 – John Labbous Jr.
John Labbous has been one of the top Super Class racers in the country over the last few years. He’s won about everything you can including the JEGS Allstars and the Super Comp World Championship. This season Lil John extended his winning ways pulling down Top 10 national finishes in both Super Gas and Super Comp.
10 – Mike Boehner
Mike Boehner won back-to-back Division 7 Super Gas title to lock down the 10 spot in our annual list. Boehner made headlines after pulling off the trifecta at Phoenix where he swept the weekend winning both days and the Super Gas shootout. Mike added a national event victory at Vegas to close out another outstanding season.
Several racers made noise this season but just missed our Top 10 List. Those racers include Taylor Iacono, Vernon Rowland, Mark Von Heeder, Amanda Boicesco, and Justin Lopes. Congrats to all on a great year.
