JEGS Summer Door Car Shootout Celebrates Ten Years at I57 Dragstrip

Nicknamed, The Biggest Little Door Car Race in the Midwest, three $10,000 winners will be crowned and piles of prizes will be awarded at I57 Dragstrip during the JEGS Summer Door Car Shootout.

BENTON, IL – The 10th Annual JEGS Summer Door Car Shootout, presented by BTE, returns to I57 Dragstrip September 17-19, 2021. Race promoter, Luke Bogacki, has seamlessly paired the attractive and flashy features of big money bracket racing alongside the warm feelings you get from your hometown, which spawns one unique environment.

Rather, in his own words, “This region is chalk full of serious door car racers looking for a place to compete for serious money, and I’d like to think we create an atmosphere of fun and fellowship.”

I57 Updates

I57 Dragstrip didn’t open for the 2020 season, which postponed the tenth anniversary celebration, and the future of the facility seemed unknown. Fortunately, conditions began looking up as a longtime racer, Donnie Ellis, obtained ownership and immediately worked to revamp the racetrack. As expected, this downtime only increased anticipation for the 10th Annual JEGS Summer Door Car Shootout.

Bogacki elaborates, “Honestly, at times I had my doubts that it would ever happen. The transformation has been phenomenal, and it’s just the beginning. Looking back, I’m really proud that we’ve been able to host this event for 10 years and I’m really excited. I think that this will be our best event yet and set the stage for future SDCS events as well as so much more at I-57.”

Only Doors for this Drag Race

As implied by the name, the JEGS Summer Door Car Shootout is only for door cars and left-hand steer roadsters. For this weekend, you’ll have to leave the dragsters parked in the garage.

Bogacki explains this rule by saying, “Initially, it was more from necessity than anything. Originally, I57 was so short and pit space was so limited that we couldn’t accommodate dragsters [both issues that have since been resolved]. Now, that was the reasoning over a decade ago. Today, we’ve got the freedom to employ different formats, but the door car thing really took off. I’m not smart enough to completely explain the success this event has developed over the years, but I’m smart enough to know not to mess with a good thing!”

Cash and Prizes

Three $10,000 to win main events will be contested Friday through Sunday along with over $35,000 in giveaway prizes throughout the weekend. Saturday night will feature two bonus races, the Advanced Product Design Quick 16 and the ThisIsBracketRacingElite King of Illinois. Racers must be entered into the main event to be eligible, and the same car cannot run in both bonus races.

New for the 2021 event is the Bottom Bulb Bonus. No Box competitors will run separately until one remains, who will then collect a prize and move into the next round of the main event.

Friday’s Bottom Bulb Bonus is a weekend entry into the 2022 Footbrake 150, Saturday’s winner claims a set of Goodyear slicks, and Sunday’s last man standing earns an ATM 4150 carburetor.

Each day, every entrant that lost to the eventual winner will be entered in a drawing to win a $500 BTE gift certificate (Friday), BRODIX small block Chevy cast iron block (Saturday), or a $500 Mickey Thompson gift card (Sunday). Additional prizes are up for grabs with other bonuses throughout the weekend.
