DragChamp 2020 Top Dragster – Top Sportsman Top 10 List
1 – Darian Boesch
2020 Top Sportsman World Champ Darian Boesch is our 2020 Top Dragster / Top Sportsman Racer of the Year! The talented young Louisiana based racer enjoyed an outstanding season which culminated with the NHRA World Championship. In addition to the championship, Boesch finished second in the Division 4 Top Sportsman points chase. He also put together a solid Top Dragster season which saw him finish 6th in Division 4 points and 16th Nationally.
Between the two classes Darian won three Lucas Oil Series events and also won Top Sportsman at the rescheduled Southern Nationals that were completed in Gainesville. Congrats to Darian on his amazing season.
2 – Anthony Bertozzi
Anthony Bertozzi claimed the runner up spot on the year end Top 10 List after winning his 18th World Championship. No. 18 came in the Top Dragster class on the NHRA circuit. Bertozzi’s highlight of the season came at Columbus where he was runner-up in the LODRS race on Friday and won the JEGS Sportsnationals on Sunday. The win made AB the most successful racer in the history of the JEGS Sportsnationals with five victories!
3 – Ed Olpin
Utah based runner Ed Olpin made waves in both Top Sportsman and Top Dragster in 2020. Olpin locked down Top 10 finishes nationally in both classes with a 6th place finish in TS and a 10th place finish in TD. He also finished 2nd in TS points in Division 7 and 3rd in TD!
4 – Bradley Johnson
Bradley Johnson made the Top Dragster points chase interesting after running wild in Las Vegas at the end of the season. In the final few races of the year, Johnson picked up wins on a weekly basis while making a run at the championship. After winning Top Dragster at the Las Vegas LODRS and the NHRA Finals the following week, Johnson needed one more victory to steal the championship. In his last race of the season, Johnson raced to the final round where he fell to former TD World Champ Paul Nero to come up two points shy of the championship.
5 – Danny Nelson
A year after his impressive run to capture the TD World Championship, veteran racer and chassis builder Danny Nelson just missed winning the championship again! After his victory at the U.S. Nationals, Nelson traveled to Dallas needing a victory to take the championship. Much like Bradley Johnson, Nelson made it to the final round only to come up short. Ultimately Nelson finished third nationally, just 11 points out of first place.
6 – Allen Firestone
Allen Firestone has been on a tear for the last couple of seasons. A year after winning the Division 5 title, he finished 2nd in the division in 2020 while also posting a 2nd place finish nationally. The highlight of the season came at the JEGS Allstars where Firestone collected the Top Sportsman title.
7 (tie) – Al Kenny
Al Kenny generated the highest Top Dragster divisional points score (367) in the country while earning the Division 1 championship. In addition to the D1 title, Kenny finished 7th nationally.
7 (tie) – Bob Gulitti
Texan Bob Gulitti dominated the Division 4 Top Sportsman class earning the highest divisional points total in the country at 380 points. Gulitti won three times during the season to outpace Darian Boesch for the title.
8 – Aaron Stanfield
Aaron Stanfield was one of the hottest racers in the country during the 2020 season winning in a multitude of classes. While he gained most of his attention from the Factory Stock Showdown championship and his Pro Stock victory in Dallas, Stanfield also found time to compete for the Division 4 TD title. His 346 points easily outpaced 2nd place finisher J.R. Baxter to add to his already impressive trophy case.
9 – Art Hoover
Art Hoover fills the nine spot after winning the Division 6 Top Dragster title. Hoover added a 4th place finish nationally to wrap up a solid season.
10 – JB Strassweg
Division 3 class veteran JB Strassweg rounds out the 2020 Top 10 List after a solid season that saw him finish 4th in the division and 5th nationally. JB made waves in a 6 week span from late August to early October when he went to three final rounds and added a semifinal finish. His run started with a final round appearance at Bowling Green which was followed by final round finishes at the U.S. Nationals and the Fall Nationals in Dallas.
