DragChamp Top 10 List
1 – Thomas Holley
Thomas Holley grabs the top spot in the first Top 10 List of the season after a dream weekend at the Southern Big Buck Nationals in Louisiana. Holley won Box and No-Box in the same car on Saturday to cash for $15,000. He almost repeated that feat on Sunday when he fell in the semifinals in Box and drove to a runner-up finish in No-Box.
2 – AJ Ashe
Speaking of dominating performances, AJ Ashe opened the 2021 racing season by going undefeated at the rescheduled Texas Turkey Hunt 2.0 at Houston Raceway. AJ ran himself in the Super Pro final on Saturday and after single entering on Sunday, won again. I lost track of the round wins but there were a lot of them.
3 – Brandon Umberger
Brandon Umberger drove the Jelly Bean to a win and a runner-up to sweep the Pro class on Sunday at the Southwest Showdown in Tucson!
4 (tie) – Val Torres Jr.
D7 hitter Val Torres Jr. impressed at the Southwest Showdown last weekend. After opening the weekend with a win in the $8,000 stimulus race, he continued his hot streak by winning the $50K Shootout on Saturday night. The Shootout was like playing with house money as the Shootout entry was part of the prize package for winning the Stimulus race. Val turned the free entry into gold!
4 (tie) – Ross Laris
Laris Motorsports Insurance boss Ross Laris opened the season in a big way with a double up performance at the Baby Gators. The Laris family has enjoyed great success in Gainesville the last couple of years with both Ross and his son Holden collecting victories at both the Baby Gators and the Gatornationals. This year Ross won Super Comp and Top Dragster to continue the family’s stranglehold on Gainesville.
5 – Nick Curl
Nick Curl enjoyed a successful weekend at the Southern Big Buck Nationals were he won the No-Box class two out of three days!
6 – JR Barclay
JR Barclay endured a long weekend of weather delays at the Top Bulb 150 in Gulfport last weekend but his $40,000 payday on Sunday made it worth the wait. After rain plagued the event, the two $20K’s turned into one $40K which worked out well for Barclay.
7 – Travis Barnett
Louisiana runner Travis Barnett also had a big weekend at the Southern Big Buck Nationals. After posting a runner-up finish to his buddy Justin Albritton in Friday’s $10K, Barnett rolled through the field on Saturday to earn the $50K Shootout victory!
8 – Wes Neely
Mississippi Stock Eliminator racer Wes Neely kicked off the NHRA season on fire. After winning class and the LODRS event at the D4 Divisional a week ago, Neely raced to two more finals at the Baby Gators this past weekend. Although he came up short in both finals in Gainesville, four finals in two weeks is a hell of an accomplishment.
9 – Bug McCarty
10 – Jesse Adams
Closing out the Top 10 List this week is west coast racer Jesse Adams. In January, Jesse pulled off the double at Sacramento Raceway after winning Super Pro and Pro.
Logan Warr earned a shout out this week after a big weekend in Tucson. He won a $10K, made it to four in the $50K, and finished the weekend with a quarterfinal finish in Sunday’s $10K.
Sacha Hoefer almost pulled off the impossible in Tucson after she raced her 7-second street/strip car to the final round of the $50K Shootout. Although she came up short to Val Torres Jr. in the final, it was an impressive performance to say the least.
Josh Green gets the shout out this weekend after sharing the winners circle with his son at Music City last weekend. In addition to his big weekend with his son, Josh also picked up a $4K victory last month in Gulfport.
Sherman Adcock came oh so close to a double up at the Baby Gators. The former world champ made the final round in Super Gas and Super Comp only to fall short in both. Definitely an impressive performance by one of the greatest Super category racers ever.
