Northern Michigan Dragway crowns winners in weekend events

Northern Michigan Dragway hosted a pair of events this past weekend. Racing was expected to take place Friday and Saturday evenings. Saturday’s rainy weather, however, forced a postponement of Saturday’s event to Sunday afternoon. Several first-time winners made it to the winners’ wall over the weekend.

Friday night’s Statewide Towing Street Night had five racers claim victories.

Chicks on Slicks had an exciting comeback performance for Angela Mardlin of Kaleva. In her first-time back in her Chevy Nova, after suffering life-threatening injuries last summer, she managed to pull off the win in her class.

John Root of Manton captured the High School class win with his Camaro, while Eaton Rapids racer Nicole Kiogima got her first-ever win in Street Trophy with her Pontiac Firebird.

Larry Morrision of Brethren snagged his second win of the season in the Money division with his Pontiac Grand Prix.  Dave Hall of Atlanta rode to the win in Rider Class with his Ski-Doo Mach-Z snowmobile, his first time winning at NMD.

Sunday brought some cooler, windy conditions for Authentic 231 points event #5.

The “Ransom Racer” Steve Mikus topped the Bracket I field for the $1,000 win with his legendary Chevy Nova.   Bracket II found another first-time winner, as Irons’ Jamey Harthun got his first win in his first-ever final-round appearance, earning a $1,200 payday with his Chevy S-10.

Pro Trophy saw a second S-10 victory with Kaleva’s Travis Mardlin winning the 8-round race.  Street Trophy found a third S-10 taking a win, as Scott Glinski of Bear Lake cruised to victory.

Junior winners were Skyler Randall of Bear Lake in Mini Juniors, and Ann Cerka of Free Soil in Advanced Juniors as both entries gained lead position in their class’ points standings.

NMD is idle this weekend, but will be back in action June 20-22nd for the 14th Annual Bowtie Challenge.  The dragway is located three miles north of Kaleva on Potter Road.
