Slate Cummings, Cody Graham, Lucas Walker, and Charlie Lockhart lead winners at the Memorial Day Mayhem bracket race at Holly Springs, MS.
HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. – The Memorial Day Mayhem bracket race almost ended before it began after the initial weather forecasts for the race looked unfavorable. But Chad Axford of Team Flatbill Promotions stuck to the plan and somehow managed to pull off a spectacular event.
While the weather was the story early in the week, the racing captured the headlines over the weekend as the event featured 312 entries! Racers came from 12 states to support Chad and compete for big money over the Memorial Day weekend.
By Sunday afternoon, Chad and the Holly Springs staff had completed all three main events, three Gamblers races, a GABR Guaranteed Million Shootout, and increased the payouts to $10,000 on Saturday and Sunday. Credit goes to Team Flatbill as they were two entries shy of increasing the purse but chose to do so anyway. That’s how you take care of your customers.
Friday Race Results
The three-day race weekend kicked off Friday with Scott Cook (dragster) outlasting Rick Harless (Nova) in the $7,500 Super Pro final
Lucas Walker was the big story on Friday as he raced himself in the $3,000 No Box final! After losing both entries in the first round, Walker bought back and drove both entries to the final round.
Saturday Race Results
Rusty Ashmore found the winners circle early on Saturday after winning the GABR Guaranteed Million Shootout. The win earned Ashmore an entry into the Guaranteed Million in October! Rusty defeated Caroline McCarty and her wheel-standing wagon in the final.
In Super Pro action, Slate Cummings defeated Chase Rampy in the final round to take home the $10,000 paycheck! A week ago, Slate just missed a $30,000 in Huntsville when he turned it red in the final. His win Saturday had to feel great after just missing last week.
Wesley Lockhart jumped into his brother’s Monza and found himself in the winners circle after crushing the No Box class for $3,000.
Beacon Dragway was well represented after Lucas and Wesley found the winners circle at Holly Springs. Not to be out done, teammate Charlie Lockhart took the No Box Shootout win on Saturday night.
Sunday Race Results
Cody Graham capped off the weekend with a $10,000 win. Graham defeated Brando Seale in the Super Pro final on Sunday.
In the No Box class, it was more of the same as teammates Lucas Walker and Charlie Lockhart (listen to their DragChamp podcast here) split and quit in the final round. This capped off an amazing weekend for the two Kentucky racers and added to their impressive win totals for 2020.
Thanks again to Chad Axford for making the correct call and running the Memorial Day Mayhem race even though the forecast didn’t look great. Special thanks to the Holly Springs staff for keeping the track tight all weekend and putting in the long hours required to make the event special. And last but not least, thanks to the racers for supporting this event!
