13th Annual Bowtie Challenge at Northern Michigan Dragway

The 13th Annual Bowtie Challenge at Northern Michigan Dragway takes place this weekend, June 22-24, 2023.

KALEVA, MI- It’s Bowtie time again at Northern Michigan Dragway!  Chevy racers are eager to attempt their third-straight victory this weekend at the 13th Annual Bowtie Challenge Thursday through Saturday (June 22-24, 2023).

The annual event places Chevy competitors against all other makes, with a tally kept of each match-up during the three days of racing.  In 2022, Chevy won 254-225 after taking a nail-biter finish in 2021, 282-281. 

With temperatures showing highs in the 80’s and 90’s, racing action is sure to be equally hot. At last month’s Bonfire Salute, the Top Doorslammer class saw a new track record, as Tim Heiges’ Corvette layed down a 4.13 second elapsed time pass. NMD saw a nice increase in entries with a record turnout of 567 at the event.

Thursday’s race action begins at 4pm with time trials for all classes. Street Trophy and Junior classes will also have competition rounds beginning around 6 pm.

Friday and Saturday time trials begin at 11am, with eliminations expected to be underway by 2pm. Final rounds will take place by 11pm if all goes well.   

NMD plans to award close to $35,000 in prize money over the course of the weekend.  Brackets I and II will each be running for $2,000 to win Friday evening, and Saturday the stakes go up to $3,000 and $7,500 to win each class, respectively. Pro & Street Trophy also feature larger than normal payouts. In addition to their regular winnings, junior competitors will also have the chance to race for a dirt bike donated by Lee’s Offroad in Gladwin.
