On Monday last week, news rumbled throughout the east coast that the long standing NHRA Keystone Nationals had been cancelled for the year due to COVID-19 concerns and state regulations. This was the third National event cancelled in Division 1 behind Epping and Virginia along with a few other Divisional events. Epping though was rewarded with a Jegs Sports nationals that ran this past weekend to give the sportsman racers running for a National title a chance at National Points.
With racers wondering what they were going to do on the weekend off after the Reading event was cancelled, Mid Atlantic .90 President Rob Keister jumped up to the plate to offer a solution. In 2012 & 2013 Keister ran the .90 Nationals at Numidia Dragway to give back to the .90 racers with big Money and Prizes at days end. With less then stellar attendance and Rob returning to college to finish his degree, the .90 Nationals faded into the sunset.
With the weekend available Keister worked very closely with Betsy Witmer and Sarah Gingrich-Manley of Maple Grove Raceway to resurrect the .90 Nationals this time at Maple Grove. Ken Miele and his website Class Racer was already putting together a Stock & Super Stock race at Numidia that same weekend as an alternative to the Keystones.
With the sportsman racer as the #1 priority, Keister made a few phone calls to some loyal sponsors of his .90 series to see if they would support this event. Within a week, companies like Comp Cams, Lucas Oil, Powder Coat Finishes, KKC Performance, S&W Race Cars, Auto Meter, Richmond Gear, and a lot of locally owned independent companies jumped up to support this event so Keister knew it was a go!
The race will be a pre-entry only event due to the COVID-19 regulations in Pennsylvania and welcome Super Street, Super Gas, Super Comp, Top Sportsman and Top Dragster to the Reading, PA facility to run for some big cash and prizes.
