DragChamp Racer Spotlight with Cooper Hancock

This week’s DragChamp Jr. Racer Spotlight is all about 2020 NHRA Eastern Conference Finals Champion, Cooper Hancock.

COMMERCE, GA- Cooper Hancock grew up around the sport of drag racing and like most his age, he found his start in a Junior Dragster. His parents, Jeremy and Ashley are both racers themselves which ultimately introduced Cooper to the sport and he has been racing now for 5 years. Besides his parents, his PaPaw also races and Cooper looks up to him a lot.

Cooper currently competes in the 10-12 year-old category within NHRA Division 2. He follows the Lucas Oil Series and the National Open series but will also race anywhere his parents take him. His home track is Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Georgia.

About his Dragster

Cooper has had a few race cars over the years as he has moved up in the Junior Dragster ranks. He started in his dad and his Aunt Kelley’s old Junior Dragster and then eventually moved into a newer Halfscale dragster. They still have the older Junior in their shop. Cooper raced this newer Halfscale for 3 years and they just recently upgraded to another Halfscale this past year. TRS builds their engines and they run a Shockwave clutch. The car currently runs 8.90s.

Besides Cooper’s driving duties, he also helps work on the car a bit here and there. At the track, he is responsible for putting fuel in the car and keeping track of his log book. His dad and PaPaw do most of the mechanical work on the car.

Favorite Win and Bucket List

The win Cooper is most proud of would have to be his 2020 Eastern Conference Finals win in Charlotte, NC. He said, “it was fun to win and race my friend in the finals”. In the future, Cooper would like to win a National Championship and win the Million Dollar Drag Race. He also hopes to one day race his dad and beat him.

Biggest Impact

For Cooper, his Papaw has made the biggest impact on his success as a racer. He said, “my Papaw he always helps me and takes me to the finish line to watch”. When asked who he looks up to within the sport, he also said his Papaw.
