Before we get into the finalist and the actual Racer of the Month winner, let’s look back at some standout performances from October.

Several bracket racers showed out during the month including Mike Barber who won $50,000 at the Jim Harrington Bracket Nationals and followed with a $20,000 victory at the Mutt & Jeff Fall Brawl. Roger Phillips went off at the NHRA Division 7 Bracket Finals making five final round appearances on the weekend and winning four times including three Wally’s! Bobby Paul Arnett surged in October after making three finals in the same weekend on two occasions. Arnett won the track championship at Kentucky Dragway and won the $10,000 Grand Champion runoff against the other season champions.

The big dollar bracket racing tour produced some outstanding performances as well. Kyle Cultrera captured a $100,000 payday at the Fall Fling, Josh Baker followed his $25,000 victory at the Summer Fling with $10K and $5K victories in October. The Pennington Bros. tag teamed the field at the Mickey Thompson Million. Peeps grabbed a runner-up in the $20K Warm Up race and a semifinal finish in the Saturday $50K. Philip picked up the $50K victory on Saturday while Michael made two quarterfinal appearances with one coming in the Million main event.

Both the IHRA and NHRA crowned their ET World Champions in during the month. At Memphis, the IHRA champions included George Simpson (Top), Tim Pace (Mod), and David Bingham (Sportsman). The NHRA crowned their champions in Las Vegas including Nick Smith (Super Pro), Dan Cassie (Pro), Derrick Jackson (Sportsman), and Garreth Sheppeard (MC).

On the NHRA tour, a number of racers stood out during the month. This included Luke Bogacki who won the Midwest Nationals to wrap up his Super Gas Championship season. Bob Prose won Super Comp in Bristol, had a semifinal finish the following week in St. Louis, and won the St. Louis LODRS event the next week. Austin Williams rolled to three finals in seven days in his Super Gas roadster. A-dub won the LODRS at Noble, Okla., won the rain-delayed Spring Nationals at Dallas a couple days later and was runner-up on Sunday at the Fall Nationals.

The Emmons Bros. were practically unstoppable in the middle of October. In a span of seven days, the brothers teamed up to make six final round appearances! Their unbelievable triple-double streak began at the Division 4 Lucas Oil race at Noble, Okla. There Terry won Super Stock and Jerry won Stock. A few days later Jerry won the rain-delayed Houston Springnationals at the Texas Motorplex. His brother Speedy joined him in the winners circle after he won the Super Stock title. Two races, four wins! But the famous brothers weren’t done as Jerry and Speedy once again rolled into the finals on Sunday for the Fallnationals. Although both came up short, their performance over the week was legendary!

Top Contenders

Greg Stanfield proved once again that he’s one of the best racers in the country! After his first full season in Super Stock in maybe a couple of decades, Stanfield earned his 5th World Championship. To earn the title he had to win the Thunder Valley Nationals which he did. His clutch performance reminded me of how he did the same thing in the early nineties when he won four championships in a five year span.

Bryson Scruggs put his name in the hat for the Racer of the Month title after a strong month. Scruggs found himself in two $25,000 finals on Sunday at the Derby City 100K. After winning the first final, Scruggs dropped the second but earned the weekend MVP title for his strong performance. A few weeks later Scruggs earned a $10,000 victory at the 10G@BG race.

Scotty Richardson enjoyed a memorable weekend at the Mickey Thompson Million at SGMP. On Friday, Richardson raced to a runner-up finish in the Million main event which was his second Million final in a year. The following day, Richardson made another final round appearance, this time taking home the Thursday $50K win.

Adam Russell added his name to the record books after defeating Scotty Richardson in the Million Dollar main event final round! Russell and his blown 4.3x dragster were unstoppable in Friday’s main event.

October Racer of the Month

Jimmy Lewis is your DragChamp October Racer of the Month. The former NHRA Super Gas World Champ added a second World Championship to his resume after an impressive month of racing. Competing in the highly competitive and super quick Top Sportsman class, Jimmy raced to three finals in October to secure the Top Sportsman title. JL won the Dallas National event, drove to Tucson the following week where he won the D7 LODRS race, and then headed back east to Rockingham. After a first round lost in Rockingham, Jimmy once again headed west where he needed a great showing to overtake Paul Mitsos for the title.
