David Myhre wins Friday $10K and Saturday $20K to lead the winners at the California Gold Rush at Sonoma Raceway. Jeff LaSalle wins $25K shootout and JR Leerkamp collects Sunday $10K.
SONOMA, Calif. – Kyle Seipel and the Sonoma Raceway crew brought big money bracket racing to the West Coast with the California Gold Rush July 2-5, 2020. Seipel, one-half of the famed Spring Fling promotion team, created a special event which saw racers flock to the picturesque Sonoma Raceway for big money bracket racing.
The event kicked off on Thursday with the$25,000 Figspeed 64-Car Shootout. A trio of races awaited racers on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday all of which were presented by Panella Racing Engines. The weekend races included $10K on Friday, $20K on Saturday, and another $10K on Sunday. There were also Shootout races on Friday and Saturday providing racers another chance to cash-in. The event was live streamed on You Tube by Warren Evans of DragRacer.TV.
Thursday 64-Car Shootout Results
The Figspeed 64-Car Shootout featured 32 doorcars and 32 dragsters racing for $25,000 to win. West Coast bracket ace Jeff LaSalle made another big money final round appearance in his beautiful 67′ Dodge Coronett R/T. LaSalle faced off with West Coast Bracket Races promoter Chris Forsyth as both were vying for the largest payday of the weekend. At the stripe it was Jeff LaSalle and his big red Dodge taking home the big check.
Friday $10K Race Results
After a big opening race on Thursday, racing moved into the first of three Panella Racing Engines sponsored events, the first of which was the Friday $10,000 race. The final round saw two of the top names in West Coast drag racing square off in the final. Bracket racing star David Myhre represented the dragster field in the final while 5x NHRA World Champion Justin Lamb represented the door car field, off the bottom no less. Myhre and his dragster bested Lamb to claim the $10K victory.
Friday’s racing action at the California Gold Rush also included a $5,000 32-Car Shootout that saw Shawn Hart defeat Sean Eling in the final round.
Saturday $20K Race Results
The Panella Racing Engines $20,000 race was the main event on Saturday and as the final rolled around, it included two familiar faces. After making the finals on Friday, both David Myhre and Justin Lamb made a return trip to the Saturday final. In a heavyweight rematch, the outcome remained unchanged as Myhre picked up the win for the second consecutive day while Justin “settled” for runner-up honors once again.
Racers had one more chance to compete on Friday with a $5,000 Shootout. Just as above, the Saturday result was eerily similar to Friday’s final as Friday winner Shawn Hart won for the second day in a row. This time he defeated Dave Meziere of Meziere Enterprises fame in the final round. To make the feat even more impressive, Hart was driving a different dragster on Saturday but still found his spot in the winners circle.
Sunday $10K Race Results
Sunday’s $10,000 race presented by Panella Racing Engines brought a close to a California Gold Rush weekend racing. Unlike the first couple of Panella sponsored races, Sunday’s final round included racers not named Myhre or Lamb. JR Leerkamp and Marko Perivolaris met twice in two rounds as Marko was doubled until the semifinals. In the semifinals, Leerkamp used a .003 light to eliminate Marko in the door car side. Leerkamp then used a .007 light in the final round to turn back Perivolaris, this time in his dragster, in back-to-back runs.
