Tough and talented drivers Hastings, Richardson, Brannon, Serra, Dodd, Worner, Ferraro, and Martin battle for October’s Racer of the Month prize.
After a historic month of sportsman drag racing, the October Racer of the Month award proved difficult to determine. The month included not one, but three million-dollar races along with a host of big money bracket races and a full slate of NHRA Lucas Oil sportsman races.
Due to the overwhelming number of races in October and the associated performances, the team at DragChamp had some work to do to name the October Racer of the Month.
After combing through the Top 10 Lists, we identified several racers that stood above all the rest.
Million Dollar Race Winners
Of course, the first names that come to mind for their impressive performances in October are million-dollar race winners Scotty Richardson, Jeff Serra, and Kevin Brannon.
Scotty Richardson kicked off the historic month with a victory at the Spring Fling Million in Bristol. He followed that with a quarterfinal finish the following week in Memphis.
Jeff Serra drove to glory at the Great American Guaranteed $1,000,000 in Memphis while Kevin Brannon cashed at the original Million Dollar Drag Race a couple of weeks later. Brannon’s win came just weeks after a $125,000 runner-up finish at the Fall Fling at Galot.
While any of the above racers would have been a great choice for the Racer of the Month, there were more racers who showed out during the month.
Christopher Dodd won back-to-back national events at the Midwest Nationals and the Fallnationals to lock up the NHRA Super Comp World Championship. This came on the heels of a JEGS Allstars runner-up and back-to-back Lucas Oil Series wins in September.
Also, in contention for the title this month was NHRA Division 1 Super Stock standout Bryan Worner. Worner began the month by making three finals in one weekend.
At Virginia Motorsports Park, he won the rain delayed JEGS Sportsnationals followed by a win and a runner-up at the Lucas Oil Series double-header. He then drove west where a runner-up at the NHRA Finals in Las Vegas sealed the Super Stock World Championship.
A Couple More Contenders from Big Money Bracket Racing
Oklahoma bracket racer Kevin Martin showed out in October earning a win and a runner-up at the Cowpasture Nationals before running wild on Halloween at the Triple Tens in Texas. There Kevin drove to all three No-Box finals earning two wins and a runner-up.
Bailey Ferraro impressed in Montgomery after winning a $5K Warm Up race before earning a $50,000 win and $50,000 runner-up at the Million Dollar Race in Alabama.
That brings us to the winner of the DragChamp Racer of the Month winner, Nasty Nick Hastings! Nick was practically unstoppable against some of the toughest competition in the country on back-to-back weeks.
Hastings made every No-Box final at the Great American $1,000,000 and footbraked his way to a semifinal finish in the main event. He followed that with a $50,000 win a week later at the Million in Montgomery. These results add to an already unbelievable season for the talented young racer.
Nick will receive a custom Racer of the Month trophy courtesy of Theobald Motorsports. Special thanks to the Theobald family for sponsoring the Racer of the Month award and to Travis Theobald for creating the trophies.
How the winner is determined: The DragChamp Racer of the Month award is presented to the racer that makes the biggest impact on the Top 10 List during the month. To be considered for the Racer of the Month title, a racer must make at least one Top 10 appearance during the month. At the end of the month, we review the weekly lists, and select the racer that has made the biggest impact.
